Car Restoration Tips

Are you a car enthusiast? Well, you probably have an ongoing or dream restoration project. It could be you want to convert your dream car into its original factory spec as a race or show car. Below is a comprehensive guide on car restoration projects.

Stage 1: Research and Planning

Your first task is to determine the extent of the restoration project. For instance, what parts will you require? Are you considering DIY, or will you take your car to a reputable mechanic? Do not attempt a DIY project if you do not have a background in car repairs. If you do, you could end up damaging the vehicle.

Create a budget and timetable for your project. Save costs by buying used parts from cash for cash services, reputable dealers that give discounts for wholesale purchases, or buying the parts during the low season when there is a little demand for car parts. Alternatively, you could purchase a donor car to provide parts to your project car.

Stage 2: Engine Restoration

You may not need to restore the engine if it runs well. However, if it has a lot of mileage, you should consider changing critical internal components such as the water pump, timing and serpentine belts, camshaft, crankshaft, pistons, gaskets, oil seals and the fuel injectors. If you would want to use the vehicle on the track, consider high-quality aftermarket turbos, injectors, and air intake systems.

Stage 3: Car Body Restoration

Below are some tips to help you restore the vehicle's body:

  • Inspect the chassis for signs of rust. Conduct rust treatment or change entire panels or frames.
  • Strip the vehicle's paint and any filler on the body. You could either sandblast the car or use sandpaper or a sanding disk. Wear protective clothing to protect you from dust particles.
  • Do not apply a lot of filler on the dented areas. Otherwise, you will distort the vehicle's body lines. Besides, it could have bumps once you paint it.
  • Prepare the car for painting by applying primer, glazing and spot putty. Paint the vehicle in an indoor location where it is not exposed to severe temperatures, rain, or dust.
  • Two layers of undercoat and a top coat will restore the vehicle to its original factory colour. A ceramic coating will give the vehicle a glossy and shiny look.

Once the paint is dry, strip the interior by removing the seats, door panels, dashboard and carpets. Clean these components and repair or replace worn out parts. Petroleum or warm water will help you remove grease and oil in the engine bay.

And there you go! You should have a fully restored car.
